TI Announces new TNETC405 Reference Design for DOCSIS 1.1 Cable Modems

Modular Hardware Architecture and Robust DOCSIS Software API's Allow Customer Differentiation and Time to Market

DALLAS (June 12, 2001) -- Recognizing the need for a cost-effective data cable modem solution, Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE: TXN) today announced its new low cost cable modem reference design, the TNETC405. TI has built upon its industry-leading DOCSIS hardware and software technology and systems expertise to deliver a complete reference design solution that enables manufactures to speed time to market. Several major cable modem OEMs, including Toshiba, Correlant and other key customers will use the TNETC405 reference design as a basis to develop cost effective data cable modems for CableLabs(r) certifications this year. (see http://www.ti.com/sc/cablemodem)

TI's TNETC405 reference design solution offers complete data over cable service interface specification (DOCSIS) 1.1-ready hardware and software, flexible residential distribution peripherals and a communications processor. TI's technology leadership allows manufacturers a scalable solution that allows them to get to market quickly with products that meet the growing demand for digital services over cable.

"The TI modem platform offers us a robust solution. The combination of TI and Correlant's technical expertise allows us to deliver cost-effective and timely data cable modem solutions while focusing our resources on the growing demands of our customers," said Harold Tuan, CEO of Correlant. "TI's silicon is proven, allowing us to take our systems to CableLabs with confidence, knowing that the core technology has passed DOCSIS certification."

Another benefit of the TNETC405 reference design also enables customers to differentiate their products with value-added features. These can be done through TI's unique DOCSIS software API architecture and modular hardware design. "TI's solution is based on proven technology and the best DOCSIS1.1 software the industry has to offer," said Fred Berry, Vice-President, General Manager, Toshiba Network Products Division. "We strongly believe that the TNETC405 based solution will be the leader of data cable solutions."

"TI's TNETC405 solution allows manufacturers such as Toshiba, Correlant and other customers the opportunity to focus on their customers while TI's system expertise provides a complete DOCSIS 1.1 certifiable data solution," said Sandeep Kumar, TI Cable Broadband Communications General Manager. "Customers using TI's certified DOCSIS software can devote critical engineering time and resources to develop code that adds value by differentiating their products."

The new solution builds upon TI's award-winning data cable modem offerings. It features DOCSIS 1.1, the TNETC4305 communications processor, the TNETC4042A integrated DOCSIS physical layer (PHY) and media access controller (MAC).

Availability and Pricing

The TNETC405 solution is currently available, and the TNETC4305, TNETC4042A and DOCSIS1.1 software bundle is sampling now, with volume production expected in 3Q2001. The TNETC4305, TNETC4042A and DOCSIS 1.1 will be offered for suggested resale price of $26 each in quantities of 100,000. TI offers one stop data cable modem shopping solutions for DOCSIS1.1 hardware and software. TI has developed a full-range of customer support tools for the TNETC405 solution including application notes, production files and board support package (BSP).
