Texas Instruments and RealNetworks Broaden Alliance to Incorporate Digital Media Products into DSP-Based Broadband Video Client Applications
TI's High-Performance DSP Platform Will Incorporate RealNetworks' RealAudio and RealVideo in Set-top Boxes, Personal Video Recorders and Video Infrastructure Equipment
DALLAS and SEATTLE, (August 13, 2001) - Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI) (NYSE:TXN) and RealNetworks(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: RNWK) today announced they have broadened their strategic alliance to offer an integrated streaming audio and video solution for programmable digital signal processing (DSP)-based video infrastructure equipment and broadband video client devices including IP set-top boxes, network video appliances, personal video recorders, streaming media servers, IP video phones and security/surveillance equipment.
As part of the agreement, TI will integrate RealNetworks' RealAudio® and RealVideo® in its high-performance TMS320C6000 DSP platform. Consumer electronics and video equipment manufacturers that use C6000 DSPs will be able to provide their customers easy access to audio and video programming now available on the Internet through RealNetworks industry-leading RealAudio and RealVideo.
"Furthering the strategic alliance with RealNetworks allows TI to provide video and imaging customers an easy, integrated interface to more than 85% of the streaming media content on the Internet," said Pradeep Bardia, worldwide strategic marketing manager, DSP Video and Imaging, Texas Instruments. "For our customers, this will speed time-to-market for more differentiated next-generation, broadband video streaming products."
"We're excited to be broadening our relationship with Texas Instruments and integrating RealAudio and RealVideo into their market-leading DSPs targeted towards set-top boxes and other embedded devices," said Mark Bretl, vice president, Media Systems, RealNetworks, Inc. "Today's announcement ultimately benefits consumer electronics OEM customers -- this integrated platform will allow these OEMs to quickly embed streaming media capability into their DSP-based devices at a significantly reduced bill of material costs."
In recent months, RealNetworks has delivered on its commitment to extend RealPlayer®, now with more than 200 million unique registered users, to next-generation consumer devices. The company is continuing to build on over a dozen strategic agreements in the consumer appliance arena with set-top box manufacturers, console makers, cell phone manufacturers, and makers of other home Internet appliances. In January, TI and RealNetworks announced a collaboration to provide Internet multimedia solutions for next-generation wireless and digital audio devices.
TI provides video imaging systems expertise, including market knowledge, silicon solutions, video and imaging software libraries, more than 400 DSP 3rd parties, development tools and support, to speed differentiated products through complete design cycles. The high-performance and programmability of the C6000 DSP platform drives flexibility for faster upgrades of functionality and provides headroom for increased product differentiation. With current design-ins totaling more than $3 billion, the C6000 DSP platform has been widely accepted across a variety of applications.
Availability
RealAudio and RealVideo integrated onto TI C6000 DSPs is scheduled to be available for OEMs in fourth quarter of 2001.
