To improve the safety of charging Li-ion batteries, JEITA guideline was released on April 20, 2007. The guideline emphasized the importance of avoiding a high charge current and high charge voltage at certain low and high temperature ranges. As battery technology continues to evolve, battery manufacturers have released temperature safety specifications that extend beyond the JEITA standard. The BQ25622E features a highly flexible temperature-based charging profile to meet these advanced specifications while remaining backwards compatible with the original JEITA standard. Figure 8-2 shows the programmability for charger behavior under different battery temperature (TS) operating regions.
Charging safety timer is adjusted within the temperature zones to reflect changes to the charging current. When IPRECHG and ICHG are reduced to 20% or 40% in the cool or warm temperature zones, the charging safety timer counts at half rate. If charging is suspended, the safety timer is suspended, the STAT pin blinks and CHG_STAT is set to 00 (not charging or charge terminated.)
