Figure 8-1 shows how the SN54SC2T74-SEP is used to up-translate a 1.8-V signal to 3.3 V to drive an LED in this application. The SN54SC2T74-SEP does not limit the output current, so an added output resistor is used to provide the appropriate current limiting. The resistor value (R) should be determined by the LED's forward voltage (VD) and the desired forward current through the LED (ID) using this equation: R = (VCC - VD)/ID.
