SCASE29 November 2024 SN74ACT16-Q1
PRODUCTION DATA
Open-drain outputs like those available in the SN74ACT16 provide the ability to discharge a voltage node to ground without otherwise loading the node significantly. It is recommended to add a series resistor between the output and any capacitance larger than 50pF as shown in the Typical Application Block Diagram to prevent damage to the device.
The required resistor value can be determined using the maximum capacitor voltage and the maximum continuous current for the output from the equation: R ≥ VC/IO(max).
For any given RC combination, the discharge time can be determined using the discharge plot provided in the Application Timing Diagram and the equation τ = R × C. For example, to discharge a capacitor to 10% of the starting value, it takes approximately 2.303 × τ = 2.303 × R × C seconds.
