9.2.1.2.1 Sense Capacitors

The sense pins of the TPSF12C1 feed into a high-pass filter and signal combiner within the IC, which rejects the line-frequency and DM components of the power line voltages, extracting the high-frequency CM component. These sense pins operate in pairs: SENSE1A and SENSE2A connect to SENSE1B and SENSE2B, respectively.

The sense pins externally interface to the power lines using Y-rated capacitors, designated as CSEN1 and CSEN2 in Figure 9-2. Choose Y2-rated sense capacitors of 680 pF, 300 VAC in this application to establish voltages at the SENSE pins of less than 1-V peak-to-peak when operating at maximum line voltage.
