From the Nyquist sampling theorem, a minimum of two samples per cycle of the data bandwidth is required in an ideal sampled data system to reproduce sampled data with no loss of information. Thus, the first consideration for determining system sampling rate is aliasing error, i.e., errors due to information being lost by not taking a sufficient number of samples per cycle of signal frequency. Figure 2 illustrates aliasing error caused from an insufficient number of samples per cycle of data bandwidth.
