Research will continue to improve healthcare, with DSPs playing a significant role. DSPs will advance known modalities, as well as develop new applications that have a positive impact on the means and quality of care.

High-intensity frequency ultrasound (HIFU) is one of the new applications that relies on DSP for its success. HIFU enables non-invasive procedures currently done invasively. The technique focuses ultrasound waves to cauterize bleeding or destroy a tumor – turning a common diagnostic modality into a therapeutic one.

New modality optical coherence tomography (OCT) uses light waves to image tissue morphology at exceptionally high resolution. Useful in early cancer detection and ophthalmology, OCT requires real-time computationally intensive processing from DSPs.

For 3D/4D imaging, embedded processors improve the richness of 3D fetal monitoring for clinical analysis as well as enable effective 4D cardiovascular applications.

The new applications all have one thing in common. They rely on high performance, flexible DSPs to achieve these exceptional results.
