Texas Instruments Supports Voice over DSL Deployment Through Extension of Relationship with Alcatel
Alcatel's 7300 ASAM will use TI DSPs and Telogy Software™ to Maximize Service Provider Revenues
DALLAS (July 11, 2001) -- Extending its commitment to the voice over digital subscriber line (VoDSL) market, Texas Instruments Incorporated (NYSE:TXN) (TI) today announced that Alcatel (Paris: CGEP.PA and NYSE: ALA) will incorporate TI's programmable digital signal processors (DSPs) into its leading central office VoDSL solution, enabling service providers to maximize revenue for digital voice services over existing copper. Alcatel, the world leader in DSL equipment, currently utilizes TI's DSPs and Telogy Software products in its Speed Touch(tm) integrated access devices (IADs). The agreement is now extended to the central office to include Alcatel's 7300 Advanced Services Access Manager (ASAM), the world's most widely deployed broadband access platform. "As leader in the DSL equipment market, Alcatel's goal is to create new value for service providers. Voice over DSL is key to realizing the full potential of broadband for business subscribers," said Willem Verbiest, president of Alcatel's DSL activities. "By combining Alcatel's DSL expertise with TI's signal processing technology for voice over packet solutions, we are effectively reducing our customers' time-to-market for revenue-generating VoDSL services."
Alcatel's 7300 ASAM makes optimal use of the network's bandwidth resources to more efficiently deliver multiple toll-quality voice lines and data simultaneously with the use of Telogy Software products. By utilizing TI's voice-optimized DSPs and Telogy Software products, Alcatel's 7300 ASAM will support a broad set of carrier class features including tone detection and generation, voice activity detection, echo cancellation up to 128 msec, comfort noise generation and fax relay. The 7300 ASAM's integrated VoDSL gateway will also support a range of voice encoding technologies including pulse code modulation (PCM) and adaptive differential PCM (ADPCM). In addition, Telogy Software products support the ATM Forum BLES standard.
TI's programmable TMS320C5421™ DSPs and Telogy Software products provide future-proof technology allowing Alcatel to upgrade their VoDSL solutions for the purpose of adding new features and supporting evolving standards. Programmable DSPs, such as TI's voice-optimized TMS320C5400, are required for telecommunications applications where real-time algorithm processing is needed since the DSP can perform the necessary "multiply and accumulates" for MIPS intensive or high-bandwidth applications such as voice processing. Moving forward, TI offers manufacturers a competitive roadmap that combines Telogy Software products such as low bit rate codecs with the higher density and performance of the new TMS320C5500™ family.
"We are pleased to continue our work with Alcatel, enabling service providers to bring end users exciting new capabilities such as VoDSL," said Joseph Crupi, vice president of TI's Broadband Communications Group. "As world leader in DSL equipment, Alcatel's use of TI's VoDSL solutions will facilitate the growth of the VoDSL market."
