Overview

The abundance of light-emitting diode (LED) systems worldwide makes LED lighting an ideal place to add intelligent sensing. The use of sensors and wired or wireless connectivity in lighting sensor systems enables improved energy efficiency and enhanced occupant comfort.

Design requirements

Modern lighting sensor designs often require:

  • Occupancy sensors that enable daylight harvesting which leads to greater energy efficiency by dimming or turning off light when the area is unoccupied or when the ambient light level is sufficient.
  • Smart cities to leverage outdoor lighting sensors to gather data such as temperature, humidity, acoustics, air pollution level, traffic condition and more.
  • Single-chip mmWave sensors that bring a paradigm shift to motion sensing technology by providing more data with higher accuracy enabling smart cities and buildings.
