This reference design uses the LM61495 synchronous buck regulator, with internal top and bottom field effect transistors (FETs), which is configured as a synchronous inverting buck-boost converter. It generates an output of -8 V capable of delivering 2.7-A continuous (4-A peak) of current to the load, from a +12-V +/-10% input. The design is built on the PMP23241 printed circuit board, which is a four-layer board with one ounce copper for each of the four layers. The board is 76.2 mm x 68.6 mm. The solution size is approximately 17.0 mm x 30.5 mm, excluding the input bulk capacitor C1. See LM61495 functional safety failure in time rate, failure mode distribution, and pin failure mode analysis for any safety concerns.
