This demo shows that capability of TI imaging radar system. The cascaded radar is built with four single chip AWR devices, synchronized and work as a single unit, featuring both MIMO and TX beamforming to achieve high angle resolution and a long detection range.

The data capture and processing card is built on a high performance Jacinto TDA2 embedded processor. The card consumes four bandwidth data from four AWR12 chips and stores this in the SSD bank. The data can be collected for up to 45 minutes of driving, and can be transferred to PC over Ethernet. The software solution available on the card can also be used to process the raw ADC data and run the full radar signal chain for long range beam forming and short range wide field of view MIMO operations.

This first demo shows the performance in MIMO mode, which can provide an angular resolution of 1.5 degrees in azimuth and elevation estimation capability. This model can be applied when driving in a dense urban area and highway scene.

As shown in the GUI, we can detect the contour of the parked cars and fence from the range azimuth heat map. Further, this high angular resolution enables the suppression of the static car and the close by objects at far range.

Two driving cars with similar velocity and range can also be differentiated due to the high angular resolution. In addition, the moving targets are further detected as point cloud followed by 3D group tracking. The height of the ellipse shows the height of the tracked targets.

The second demo shows the performance of a dual-mode sensor by alternating MIMO and TX beamforming modes to cover both mid-range wide field of view and long-range narrow field of view. The TX beamforming mode supports car detection range of 350 meters, with dynamic beam steering to track the desired field of view. This extended range mode can be applied when driving on highway.

As shown in the GUI, the range and azimuth heat map of the two modes are overlapped. Initially, we start scanning the scene in TX beamforming mode within 60 degree field of view and up to 350 meters to lock on the targets to be tracked in the long range.

Meanwhile, the MIMO curve is 120 degree field of view and 130 meters or range to cover wide field of view and immediate range. Then, TX beam only focuses on the target cars by steering the beam covering 10 degree field of view around the target cars.

A drone is flying above the parking lot to keep track of the car driving in the far range. Both angle and range information is available, as shown in the range azimuth heat map.
