Mobile smart TV
Mobile smart TV is a growing category that can extend the AV personal electronics category. This training includes all the information you will want to know about the mobile smart TV category. Introduction, value proposition, benefits and design considerations of the mobile smart TV category are included in the training. The last section covers the benefits of DLP® Pico™ technology for this application. We designed this training based on the questions that product development managers and engineers are asking themselves about this attractive application.

Hello, this is Juan Alvarez. Welcome to the Mobile Smart TV training, a personal electronics growth opportunity. Let's look at the agenda of this three part series. The first portion or this section will be focused on what is a mobile smart TV and its value proposition. Then we will look at design considerations of the mobile smart TV. And then finally, we will look at DLP Pico products for mobile smart TV and how this technology can be incorporated to this end equipment.
All right. So what is a mobile smart TV, and what is its value proposition? Let's go ahead and get started with section one. So what is a mobile smart TV? A mobile smart TV is the combination of a traditional smart TV with the fact that it has mobility.
So let's look at what is a smart TV? A smart TV has a couple of components. The first one is the operating system, and this is, traditionally, for example, an Android OS. And the benefits are that it provides a very user friendly interface to the user, it also provides a capability of upgrading the system itself, and then third, it also provides applications that are customized and that can be utilized for the display itself.
The second benefit is you can stream content. And when I say stream content, we're talking about accessing the internet. And in this case, you can stream content, either content that the user has or content via Netflix or other applications. And then finally, again, using the internet is providing more traditional internet access services, like, for example, the weather. So you should be able to access the weather or be able to access a website through a mobile smart TV.
Now, let's switch over about the mobility piece of it. So the benefit of a mobile smart TV is going to be that you can have a display on virtually any surface. Think about going camping and being able to project the display right away, anywhere.
Secondly, it's going to be always with you, which means that we're talking about portability. And so this is typically a battery operated system, and it's also lifestyle, so something that you can probably take in your backpack, take it with you, and be able to enjoy music and video content virtually anywhere. And finally, its connectivity is going to be Wi-Fi or cellular to allow it to be portable.
So now that we have looked at what is a mobile smart TV, let's go ahead and take a look at its value proposition in more detail. So here are the main value propositions for a mobile smart TV. First of all, it's screenless. This means there are no bezels around the frame. It's on demand, so pretty much, you can turn it off if you want some quiet or if you just want to listen to music. And then, you can turn on the image when you want to watch your favorite content.
It is scalable, and so the size really-- the size is going to depend on the need, from a small personal viewing area to a large viewing area that can accommodate a larger group. Also, it's small-- so small that you can literally use a small backpack to carry around and take it virtually anywhere.
It also can provide a quick setup. Just place it on the table top or on the floor, push the "on" button and go and be ready to enjoy all the content. And finally, it is smart, which means that it does have an operating system, such as an Android OS, where you can enjoy all the benefits of a traditional smart TV. In summary, you're able to share your media content virtually anywhere on the go.
Now, let's switch gears, and let's look at a couple of use cases. These use cases allows for a traditional AV personal electronics category to be extended to new applications. So first, let's look at the flat panel smart TV. You can go from a standard flat panel smart TV and extend product category to a portable mobile smart TV.
Second one is for a Bluetooth speaker, can now be extended and add video as well. And it is not just enjoying music, but also enjoying all the viewing capabilities. And then finally, with all the growth of virtual assistants that are coming up, now you can extend the audio that is provided when a person ask and response. An example here is, "what's the weather?" Instead of just saying, "the weather is," you're now actually seeing what the weather is going to look like.
Now, you may wonder, how attractive is this market? Well, the market here, there are a couple of things in regards to market outlook that we want to share with you. First of all, this is a great category targeted for millennials. If you look at what the millennials care about in terms of what they need and what they use-- for example, they like to look at interactive technologies, they expect things to be hiccup-free, to be efficient, they believe that mobile is a platform of choice, and their less tolerance for poor user experiences, then you can see how this category fits really well within that segment.
Also, we do view market growth. And when I'm talking about market growth, I will say we have seen already past performance, from a 25% to 50% unit growth, quarter on quarter. So we have seen this category grow, again and again, in the past. And there's a lot of room for growth yet to be done.
What we've seen also is, in the past, we've seen that the main resolutions of this category are between HD and is now shifting to Full HD category. And finally, we have seen a very fast adoption rate in China. In fact, in China, they have a special name on how they call this category. The call it the screenless TV category, to relate to the same type of category that we've be covering so far.
After looking at the market outlook of the mobile smart TV category, you still may be wondering, how is this new category being able today? Well, it all starts with an optical engine that is small enough to fit inside the end equipment and bright enough to be able to display an image on the wall. And behind that optical engine, there is going to be a DLP Pico digital micromirror device, and we will have an opportunity to talk much more about this technology and the components of the system itself much later in the following sections.
This concludes section one of the mobile smart TV training series. Let's go ahead and take a quick look at a summary. So in this section, we covered, what is a mobile smart TV?, and we noted that a mobile smart TV, it's a great mix between a traditional smart TV with all the benefits of mobility.
We discussed all the major compelling value proposition of the mobile smart TV, which includes screenless display, scalable image size, it's small, it's quick to set up, and it also has a smart TV interface. We looked at a couple of use case extensions. So these are the smart TV, the Bluetooth speaker, and then the artificial intelligence virtual assistant, where for the Bluetooth speaker and for the artificial intelligence virtual assistant, you're adding a visual aspect to it.
And then finally, we looked at the market outlook. We noted that it fits the millennial segment perfectly, given mobility, ease of use, and interactivity. And then finally, we noted that this category is growing, or has been growing, on a quarter on quarter basis.
Well, thanks for watching section one, and now you are ready to go to the next two sections. The second one is called design consideration of a mobile smart TV, and that's where we go into more details about all the different design considerations that are required for a mobile smart TV. And then finally, we're going to be looking at how DLP Pico products are incorporated into the mobile smart TV and equipment.
