In-Home Display from Talon Communications based on TI low-power RF technology offers consumers a smart home solution
Second generation IHD based on TI’s CC2530 low-power RF system-on-chip provides increased visibility into energy usage
Bangalore (October 8, 2009) — As consumers demand greater visibility into their energy consumption in order to keep energy costs down, Talon Communications has selected Texas Instruments Incorporated’s (TI) low-power RF technology as the preferred solution for the Talon edotTM In-Home-Display (IHD), the latest in a family of Home Area Network (HAN) devices servicing the Smart Energy Initiative. The edot IHD utilizes TI’s CC2530, a complete IEEE 802.15.4 2.4-GHz radio frequency (RF) system-on-chip solution. Talon’s edot offers a simple user interface that displays relative energy cost and also provides status updates that include RF link quality and battery status condition. Talon’s “green” device offers a battery life of 5-7 years and, with its built in magnet, can be conveniently attached to high energy consumption appliances to remind consumers of the best time to use. “The market for Home Area Network devices is nascent and Talon is at the forefront of developing HAN products, including the world’s first IHD in early 2007 and other devices including Energy Service Portals (ESP), routers and gateways,” said Shimon Gersten, CTO at Talon. “Talon edot is the most cost effective IHD available, enabling utilities to provide their customers with the information they need to make intelligent choices on reducing electricity usage.”
“With its fridge magnet form factor, the Talon edot provides an extremely intuitive way for the consumer to monitor energy consumption and cost,” said Emmanuel Sambuis, general manager of TI’s metering business. “TI’s smart grid portfolio makes advanced home automation possible with a broad range of solutions, including the CC2530, which is an ideal solution for this type of device due to its high integration and ZigBee communication capabilities.”
TI's broad portfolio drives smarter grid solutions
TI's comprehensive utility metering portfolio includes devices targeted at electricity, water and gas metering, as well as power line communications (PLC) and radio frequency (RF) interfaces for advanced meter infrastructure (AMI) that allow customers to design smart grid solutions.
