Although an input capacitor is not required for stability, good analog design practice is to connect a capacitor from IN to GND. This capacitor counteracts reactive input sources and improves transient response, input ripple, and PSRR. Use an input capacitor if the source impedance is more than 0.5Ω. A higher value capacitor is necessary if large, fast rise-time load or line transients are anticipated. A higher value capacitor is also required if the device is located several inches from the input power source.
Dynamic performance of the device is improved by using a larger output capacitor. The TPS7B92 requires an output capacitor of 1μF or larger (0.47μF or larger capacitance) for stability. An equivalent series resistance (ESR) between 0.001Ω and 1Ω is also required. For best transient performance, use X5R- and X7R-type ceramic capacitors because these capacitors have minimal variation in value and ESR over temperature. When choosing a capacitor for a specific application, be mindful of the DC bias characteristics for the capacitor. Higher output voltages cause a significant derating of the capacitor. Use an output capacitor within the range specified in the Recommended Operating Conditions table for stability.
