8.1.4 Rectifier Diode Selection

A Schottky diode (when used as a rectifier) provides the best efficiency due to its low forward voltage drop and near-zero reverse recovery time. TI recommends a diode with a reverse breakdown voltage, VD(BR), greater than or equal to MOSFET drain-to-source voltage, VDS, for reliable performance. It is important to understand the leakage current characteristics of the Schottky diode, especially at high operating temperatures as it impacts the overall converter operation and efficiency.

The diode power rating and package is selected based on the calculated current, the ambient temperature and the maximum allowable temperature rise.
