7.3.3 Soft Start and Pre-Biased Soft Start

The TPS56637 features an internal 2-ms soft-start function. The internal soft start circuitry controls the output voltage slope during startup. This avoids excessive inrush current and ensures a controlled output voltage rise time. It also prevents unwanted voltage drops from high impedance power sources or batteries. When EN pin is set to start device operation, the internal soft-start circuitry will begin ramping up the reference voltage to the PWM comparator with a controlled slope. If the output capacitor is pre-biased at startup, the device initiates switching and start ramping up only after the internal reference voltage becomes greater than the feedback voltage VFB. This scheme ensures that the converters ramp up smoothly into regulation point.
