Follow Surge Test Setup

Shielded cable surge test with direct contact on cable shield:

  • Verify the surge injection point is properly connected to the shield
  • Verify there is no discontinuity on the shield of the cables
  • Point of noise injection needs to be at least 10cm away from the DUT and LP

Shielded cable surge test with CDN connector:

  • Verify both side of the Ethernet cable matches
  • Verify the CDN and Ethernet cable type match
    • Using unshielded cable CDN with shielded cable mismatch can potentially increase reflective noise due to the discontinuous ground in the signal lines.
    • Using unshielded cable CDN with shielded cable can also increase the impedance of the return path between signal lines and earth ground which can increase the noise ratio done by surge test
  • Verify the Noise injection CDN is properly connected to the earth ground
  • Verify both DUT and LP are away from the CDN connector
  • Longer cable is preferred on the link partner side
    • Longer cable on the link partner side can reduce some effect of surge noise done to the link partner
General test setup procedure:
  • Verify surge noise injection cable is straight, without loops
  • Verify the Ethernet cable is placed properly on the insulator, and does not contact earth ground
  • Verify the Ethernet cable is placed away from any noise sources
  • Add a good return path from the RJ45 shield to earth ground
  • Verify there are no loops on the Ethernet cable to reduce cross talk
  • Use shielded cable for better EMI performance:
    • Having a shielded cable is better than non-shielded cable, as the shielded cable provides a path from MDI lines to ground through cable shield or decoupling capacitors inside shielded cable CDN
    • For non-shielded cables, all noise can go directly to signal lines with minimal or no noise coupling to ground
