Fraunhofer Institut fuer Integrierte Schaltungen
Fraunhofer IIS is a leading research laboratory in the area of audio coding. Since the start of audio coding work some ten years ago, Fraunhofer IIS has actively driven forward the development of audio compression algorithms. Major parts of MPEG 1 Audio Layer-3 (MP3), the most popular format on the Internet, have been devised at Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen. Another coding algorithm that was developed in cooperation with experts from Fraunhofer IIS is MPEG-2 Advanced Audio Coding (AAC), which is the most efficient coding algorithm currently available. AAC offers a data reduction by a factor of 16 while maintaining CD quality.
Besides devising advanced algorithms, Fraunhofer IIS engineers focus on the efficient real-time implementation of high-quality low-bitrate audio and video coding schemes on DSPs. Fraunhofer IIS implementations are widely used in professional as well as consumer devices.
Moreover, Fraunhofer IIS has developed one of the first mechanisms to technically protect intellectual property rights (the Multimedia Protection Protocol, MMP) and is working on audio watermarking technologies. Fraunhofer IIS is active in international efforts to develop methods to technically manage and protect intellectual property rights, including the MPEG-4 work on Intellectual Property Management and Protection, the Audio Engineering Society's (AES) activities on Internet Audio Delivery Systems and the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI).
Fraunhofer and TI's new C64x DSP and C55x DSP cores
TI's new DSP cores definitely address the demands of advanced mobile multimedia applications, both to achieve higher processing power and to enlarge the battery running time especially for portable audio devices.

The phenomenal increase in speed and power efficiency will enable their customers to pack more broadband-capable devices onto boards and improve performance by several magnitudes. With these new DSP cores, GAO is confident that they will not only be able to meet the criteria for cost/performance but also exceed it.
Hunt Engineering
Hunt Engineering designs and manufactures DSP hardware platforms based exclusively around TI's TMS320 DSP family, with targeted applications in the imaging/industrial inspection, SONAR/RADAR, acoustics and industrial control areas. The company specializes in combining multiple high-performance DSP processors with fast I/O interfaces, which, in many cases, leads to enormous bandwidth requirements in Gbytes/second and beyond. Hunt has developed unique technologies (HEART and HERON) to address these needs.
Hunt Engineering and TI's new C64x DSP and C55x DSP cores
Hunt will offer the new C64x DSP core processors as HERON modules, allowing existing customers to upgrade immediately and easily from the current C62x DSP, a value-added customer benefit. For example, Hunt's current wireless communications customers will see a performance gain of around 7x, while industrial inspection customers will see an improvement of around 15x. Many customers in radar and sonar will also profit from the module upgrade: key operations will be accelerated by between 6x-10x. Developers will benefit too, as they can start working on C64x DSP applications now, using the same software environment and interfaces as will be used in the final C64x DSP application. When the C64x DSP-based processor module becomes available, the developer simply replaces the C62x DSP-based modules with C64x DSP-based modules. For many of Hunt's current fixed-performance level projects, the C64x DSP will allow the project to be cost-reduced, extending markets and bringing new opportunities. For example, several wireless communications projects have used IF-band ADC converters feeding multiple C62x DSP processors. By making the easy switch to a C64x DSP HERON module, these can now move to a single processor solution. This brings a welcome cost reduction; but in many cases, this also means that more channels can be implemented in a single rack or cabinet of equipment. This brings even further reductions in size, power consumption and ultimately cost.
Ultimately, the C64x DSP core is a crucial part of Hunt's future plans, and will complement their existing modular C62x DSP and C67x DSP products. They are fully committed to the C64x DSP core, and will use the power of the C64x DSP to enhance their current systems.
Hyperception, Inc.
Hyperception, Inc. was founded in 1984 to provide DSP engineering software development tools that combined the power and cost-effectiveness of two emerging technologies: the IBM PC and DSP-based hardware. Since its inception, Hyperception has been committed to supplying cost-effective software tools that reduce or eliminate design barriers for DSP developers and engineers. The company's graphical, component-based software tools now support the latest DSP technologies and focus on the areas of traditional DSP design and analysis, virtual instrumentation, code generation and simulation/CASE.
Hyperception and TI's new C64x DSP and C55x DSP cores
Support is planned within Hyperception's RIDE (Real-time Integrated Development Environment) software to provide TI's new DSP cores with a graphical, component-based method of algorithm design. This combination of Hyperception development software with TI's new eXpressDSP Real-Time Software Technology and the new TI DSP cores will enable engineers of all types and levels of expertise to create designs in an unprecedented fashion. The overall scope of Hyperception's integration effort will be the bringing of products to market faster and with far more efficiency than ever before. Because Hyperception's software products fall into a cross-product development category, the benefit will likely be one of a general increase in the overall usage of DSPs in those areas requiring (or desiring) lower power. Hyperception believes it likely that advanced wireless applications (some of which may include direct real-time imaging, for example) might be one good area of increased business.
"Texas Instruments C64x DSP core has significant design enhancements that will allow our graphical component-oriented software development tools to achieve even better efficiency, enabling a faster time-to-market ratio for our customer base."
"The fact that Texas Instruments new C55x DSP core slashes code size by 30% while continuing to focus on power-efficient performance and low system cost will likely account for a number of new design wins in application areas not yet even considered as DSP-related product areas."

Celebrating 10 years of RTOS solutions, Precise is a privately held company with headquarters in Ottawa, Canada and sales representation in more than 10 countries.
Precise and TI's new C64x DSP and C55x DSP cores
Precise will be porting its unique embedded Internet stack, Precise/RTCS, and its own Precise/MQX DSP RTOS to the C64x DSP and C55x DSP cores. Since the C64x DSP and C55x DSP cores are code-compatible with the C62x DSP and C54x DSP respectively, Precise expects the ports to be risk-free.
Without having to develop additional optimizations in the stack, Precise anticipates a 300% to 400% performance improvement in Precise/RTCS when running with the C64x DSP. This is possible because the C64x DSP is that much more powerful and because the C compiler delivers close to the same performance as a hand-coded assembler. The increase in speed should make the C64x DSP core a leading candidate for several data convergence applications such as cellular base stations, routers and gateways.
Similarly with the C55x DSP core, Precise expects up to five times improved performance in Precise/RTCS. The increased performance and low-power per MIPs rating should make the C55x DSP core a strong candidate in next-generation wireless communication devices since the C55x DSP core has the power to support single-chip solutions.
"Our Precise/RTCS is a unique TCP/IP stack specifically designed for embedded Internet applications that require network connectivity. When you're working across a network, nothing's more important than performance. TI's new C64x DSP core delivers the highest DSP performance in the industry, so we can provide our customers with even more significant throughput improvements over existing network connections."
"The power efficiencies that Texas Instruments has made to its C55x DSP core are very exciting. Add that to its performance enhancements, and TI has developed an ideal DSP core for use in battery-powered Internet appliances and devices. Combine that with our unique Precise/RTCS embedded Internet stack, and DSP software developers are provided with a powerful, effective DSP solution for Internet accessibility."

(NASDAQ: RSYS) designs and manufactures embedded subsystems that are used in a wide variety of electronics systems, from telecommunications equipment to medical devices to robotics applications. Its subsystems include Intel-based embedded computers, signal processors, communications interfaces and certain types of embedded software. RadiSys' highly differentiated position in the market is a result of its intense focus on Intel-based technology, having the broadest array of building blocks and a "perfect fit" product development strategy of using its intellectual property to design high-volume customer- and application-specific subsystems.
RadiSys and TI's new C64x DSP and C55x DSP cores
RadiSys is a leader in C6000 DSP based off-the-shelf and customized Voice Gateway solutions, with their customers' voice processing requirements more than doubling every year. In addition to the voice processing requirements, most of the applications now require handling and management of both TDM and packetized data which creates more demand on the DSP and peripherals. To meet these demands, the new C64x DSP cores together with additional peripheral functionality can be targeted for very low-cost, high-density converged network products.
With the higher speed core, RadiSys will be able to do more packet processing on board the DSP as well as executing or at least accelerating some of the software-intensive protocol stacks such as TCP/IP, RTP/RTCP, H.323 and MEGACO and other emerging standards. Typically the stacks run on an I/O processor, but with an increase in channel count, the IOPs don't scale up as well as the DSPs do. With faster cores, each DSP can not only handle the many channels of voice processing but also all of the associated packetizing, encryption, mixing, statistics collection and jitter buffer management.
"RadiSys is excited by yet another pivotal design upgrade from Texas Instruments for its C6000 DSP platform. With relative ease, our mutual customers can benefit from the broad range of RadiSys and TI software and tool offerings that they enjoy now, while experiencing an exponential boost in performance (up to 1.1 GHz) with the new generation of C6000 DSPs."

They will be able to boost the channel density of computationally intensive algorithms such as G.728 to the full span or fractional spans that the market demands, providing xDSL channel density improvements as well.
"Texas Instruments new C64x DSP core is especially suited for remote access applications such as modem, fax, voice and xDSL because of the improvements that can be obtained in Viterbi, Reed Solomon and other algorithms. These algorithms are the core of our remote access software offering, and once again, TI is providing the high performance solution."
"Texas Instruments new C55x DSP core cuts power dramatically, providing current C54x DSP customers with a clear upgrade path to a range of code-compatible price/performance options. We are excited about providing our fully convergent voice, fax and V.90 modem multi-channel access pool on the C55x DSP with channel densities suitable for enterprise and even server-class applications."

Traquair and TI's new C64x DSP core
In conjunction with Hunt Engineering, Traquair's HERON DSP systems already provide their customers with the means of utilizing multiple TMS320C62x and TMS320C67x DSPs, in any combination, within a easy-to-use modular hardware framework. Utilization of DSPs using the C64x DSP core will naturally and easily extend the capabilities we support, offering substantially higher processor performance, higher throughput, maintained code compatibility and improved code efficiency.
Traquair and strategic partner Hunt Engineering have gone to great lengths to offer continuity in the hardware and software that they offer. The C64x DSP core and future C6000 DSPs from TI are already planned for and easily incorporated within the HERON framework. Traquair's customers will be amongst the first to benefit from C64x DSP core technology, by being able to enhance their existing HERON systems with C64x DSP based processors, with little if any impact to their application software. HERON processor modules supporting C64x DSP technology will be announced shortly.
