7.1.2 Split Supply use

The LM339 Family can be used with split (±V) supplies, where the GND pin becomes VEE or V- (the most negative supply voltage), provided that the difference between the supplies (VCC - VEE) does not exceed the specified maximum supply voltage (36V). Do note that the output now swings to the negative VEE supply and not to common ground, so level shifting or external pass device is be necessary for ground referenced logic levels. Be mindful of the limited positive input voltage range at low split supply voltages. A +5V/-5V split supply has only a -5V to +2V input range!
