Overview

Our integrated circuits and reference designs allow you to create traction inverter designs that efficiently convert DC power to alternating phases of power to drive multi-phase motors.

Design requirements

Traction inverter designs require:

  • Safely and efficiently control and protect the power switch (IGBT/SiC).
  • Position sensing of the motor shaft (resolver replacement).
  • Following state-of-the-art architecture regarding system redundancy in order to allow implementation of the system on the highest safety level.

Power stage

Power stage consists of high current switching components such as IGBTs and SiC transistor modules. These modules are able to block high voltages and carry high currents. To regulate the traction motor speed and torque, the modules are controlled by input PWM according to appropriate algorithms. Intrinsic motor inductance helps to create sinusoidal phase currents. A multirail isolated DC/DC converter provides bias voltage for the power stage. In the case of a 3-p traction inverter, at least four galvanically isolated outputs are needed. The high current switching components need to be temperature monitored and protected. Most integrated modules have either NTC or remote diode temperature sensors built in. These need to be monitored by the system controller. Galvanic isolation is needed for safety.
