Overview

Design requirements

Open loop stepper drive systems often require:

  • Efficient small form-factor hardware protected power stage with fault feedback.
  • Integrated microstepping indexer with stall detection.
  • Flexible decay modes for smooth torque and high resolution microstepping.
  • Input protection against reverse polarity and overcurrent.

Integrated stepper driver power stage

The power stage is typically two full-bridges FET based for bipolar steppers or 5 half-bridges for a 5 phase stepper. The smart gate driver converts step and direction signals into motor microsteps using current control, it also adds diagnostics/protection for over current (OC). The gate driver has major impacts on power stage performance, efficiency and protection. FET’s can either be integrated with a stepper driver or external.
