In motor driver PCB design, multi-vias are often used for high current connections between layers. Giving proper via dimensions and quantity to achieve low resistance and longtime reliability is important. In general, the diameter of the via should at least be the length of the trace. In the case of using a copper plane as a trace, multiple vias should be located close to where current enters or exits the component pins.
Table 3-1 lists the current capacity for different via diameters for 10°C rise for a 1-oz PCB as per IPC-2152 standard.
