All insulators are not created equal. Quality of insulation depends on its dielectric strength. As Table 4-1 shows, air has a low dielectric strength and solid insulators such as epoxy, silica filled mold compound, polyimide and SiO2 have progressively higher dielectric strengths. SiO2 is an excellent insulator because, unlike polyimide and other polymer-based insulators, SiO2-based insulators do not degrade with exposure to ambient moisture. SiO2-based insulators tend to have very high working voltages for the lifetime of the components.
Insulator | Dielectric Strength |
---|---|
Air | ~ 1 VRMS/µm |
Epoxy | ~ 20 VRMS/µm |
Silica filled Mold Compound | ~ 100 VRMS/µm |
Polyimide | ~ 300 VRMS/µm |
SiO2 | ~ 500 VRMS/µm |
